Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection

Water Resources Opportunities Subcommittee

The Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection (LICAP) Water Resource Opportunities Subcommittee (WROS) will look at potential short-term risks facing water suppliers, treatment and distribution of potable water from our sole source aquifer.

Some short-term risks are groundwater contamination, pending water quality regulations specific to VOC’s, Nitrates, Perchlorate, CVOC’s, personal care products (pharmaceuticals), isolated salt-water intrusion conditions, and increasing water demands, as well as irrigation demands, emergency planning and the impact and need of sewers.

The issues and/or risks that are identified by WROS will be part of the 2017 Groundwater Resources Management Plan. Included will be recommendations to strengthen the overall management of the aquifer, as well as proposed legislative initiatives.
